14th Annual South Haven's Salute to Veterans

South Haven’s Salute to Veterans is an annual tradition honoring injured and disabled veterans with a memorable day on Lake Michigan. The event began more than 40 years ago when the South Haven Steelheaders, led by a local disabled Vietnam veteran, organized a fishing trip for a group of fellow disabled veterans.

Today, Operation Injured Soldiers, the South Haven Steelheaders, local charter captains, boat owners, and volunteers carry that tradition forward. Their combined efforts have transformed one fishing trip into a lasting community tribute built around time on the water, camaraderie, and appreciation for those who have served.

Join us at noon to “Pack the Piers” and give the veterans a rousing South Haven welcome as the fishing boats return to the harbor!

On Saturday, August 15, Riverfront Park will host family activities and veteran resources, including hands-on programs with Michigan DNR Outdoor Educators. Active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans, and Blue and Gold Star Mothers can also receive free admission for themselves and one guest at the Michigan Maritime Museum.
At 11:45 a.m., the public is encouraged to make their way to South Haven’s piers ahead of noon for the return of the Welcome Back Parade of Boats. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the waterfront and welcome participating veterans home as vessels enter the harbor beneath a patriotic flyover.

Featured vessels include the historic tall ship Friends Good Will, the replica U.S. Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat 36460, the luxury tug Terrapin carrying this year’s honored veterans, and the South Haven Area Emergency Services fireboat.
