The sun begins to set over South Haven’s South Beach. The air starts to change. The horizon feels closer. Lake Michigan’s surface settles and glistens. Colors gracefully streak through the sky.
Why Is the Heart So Fond of Sunset?
We’ve been fascinated with the sun for as long as we’ve been walking the earth. Our lamp lighting our way through the day, it simply charms us with its majesty.
The setting sun attracts us because it is one of nature’s most beautiful and expressive displays. The transition from day to night has always inspired artists to capture what it moves within them. A South Haven sunset attracts both locals and visitors to pause and gaze across the water.

Connecting with the Self and the World
Reaching the waterfront, you slip off your shoes and stroll toward the shoreline with the soft, cool sand between your toes. A light breeze brushes toward you from the water. Time begins to slow. Quiet, calm, reflective, you listen to the sounds that become clearer beyond the bustle of day.
Perhaps you sit down and wrap your arms around your knees. Slowly, patiently, the sun descends further into the horizon. Its shadows and dimming rays make you aware of silhouettes of birds and boats and, to your left or your right, the pier and the lighthouse.
In its time, the sun disappears, welcoming the stars into the moonlit sky. The air continues to cool. Sometime after, you stand, brush yourself off and begin your walk back to the eclectic nightlife that always awaits those who gather in the Haven for fun.
