Children's book authors Patricia Sutton and Sandy Carlson will be signing their shipwreck books at the Michigan Maritime Museum Saturday, August 11th from 12pm-4pm, during Blueberry Festival weekend.
Sutton’s newly released book, Capsized! The Forgotten Story of the SS Eastland is a narrative nonfiction, using eyewitness accounts to detail the events leading up to the fateful day of the disaster and provides a minute-by-minute account of the ship's capsizing in the Chicago River in 1915. Capsized! presents the catastrophe of the SS Eastland in a tone appropriate for younger readers, with two maps and diagrams and 30 black and white images to help visualize the chaos of that day.
Patricia Sutton is a former elementary/middle school teacher who coauthored districtwide curriculum for Illinois’s largest school district and was a Golden Apple Award finalist for teacher excellence in the Chicago area. She is a member of SCBWI and lives in Madison, Wisconsin. She says about the event, “I can’t wait to bring the forgotten story of the SS Eastland back to its home port in South Haven.”
Author Sandy Carlson grew up on the Great Lakes, swimming, boating, star-gazing, and beach combing. She also grew up telling ghost stories to any relatives or friends who would listen. Put the two together, and years later you have Tales of the Lost Schooner, incorporating ghost stories on the Great Lakes set in a historical fiction format. Follow immigrant Honor in 1854, starting with his journey on the first Orphan Train, and then around the Lakes on a schooner in search of his sisters. Tales of the Lost Schooner is a middle-grade historical fiction book about Honor’s journey around Michigan’s Mitt — with ghost stories from the Great Lakes.
These great reads are perfect for your young readers (8 to 14 years) this summer. Pick out one of the many maritime titles from the Museum’s Book Nook and read together as a family! For more information, contact the Museum at 269-637-8078 or visit their website.
