South Haven’s favorite native son, Dr. Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858 – 1954) and the father of
modern horticulture, 4-H, nature study and the agricultural extension service, will be the
inspiration for the second annual Bailey Conference (OCTOBER 5TH ) and Agri Tour (October 4th )
in South Haven, Michigan.
In celebration of the work and extensive agricultural influence of Dr. Bailey, The Bailey Museum
will host an Agricultural bus tour of four unique farms in West Michigan, Friday October 4th. At
the conclusion of the tour, participants will return to the Bailey Museum for music, local food,
beverages, an exhibit by Michigan artist Conrad Kauffman, conversation and walks through the
On Saturday, October 5th , the one-day 2019 Bailey Conference will feature local and national
speakers, art, display tables, and a chance to speak with professionals all inspired by the work,
philosophy and life of Dr. Liberty Hyde Bailey.
Keynote speakers will include the nationally celebrated founder of the Archangel Ancient Tree
Archive, David Milarch, who has set upon a life’s mission to propagate and reintroduce the

Authors, John Linstrom and John Stempien, will introduce their new book Bailey Gardner’s
Companion, which brings together in one book the best and most accessible garden writings of

The Conference will include ten break-out sessions which will include the following topics Clean
Water for the World; Wetlands; Biodiversity and Climate Change; Native Plants and Septic
Fields; Environmental Sustainability; Where your Recycling Goes; and The History of Dr. Liberty
This Conference will start with registration at 8:00 am on October 5 th . Participants can choose to
attend many of the 12 different programs as well as shop, meet and greet presenters at their
display tables throughout the day. Breakfast, snacks, and a full lunch are included.
