Winter Day or Weekend Trip
Only have a day or two to spend in the area this winter? Here is our list of recommended activities:
Morning
Start your day off with a brisk morning walk. The Black River and Lake Michigan have a beauty of their own - even in the winter! The lighthouse is a great destination – the frozen ice on the lighthouse is an amazing sight!
Warm up with a hot beverage from one of our many coffee shops and bakeries. From coffee to hot chocolate to specialty drinks, you’ll find something for every taste.
Explore the magic of winter! From sledding down the St. Joseph street hill to snowshoeing or snowmobiling down the Kal Haven trail or Sarrett Nature Center, there’s plenty of ways to enjoy outside in the winter.
Skiing in the South Haven Area
For skiers, you’ll find our local Ski slopes Timber Ridge and Bittersweet only a bit over ½ hour drive! They also have tubing for the kids and provide ski lessons for those that need a little direction!
Afternoon
Experience local history and culture in one of our lovely Museums. The Center for the Arts, Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum, Flywheelers Museum, and Michigan Maritime Museum offer unique exhibits and a chance to learn about our historic past. Check for specific off-season hours of operation.
Enjoy an afternoon matinee at our historic downtown movie theater. You won’t find first run movies at such an affordable price anywhere else!
Stroll downtown to experience one of South Haven’s many shops and boutiques to find that special something. From clothing and art to antiques and jewelry, you’re sure to find something for everyone! Many shops remain open year round, but please check for specific hours of operation.
South Haven Ice Rink
Have fun with the kids at our fabulous Ice Skating rink! You can rent everything you need for a fun afternoon. Located under the Pavilion in downtown South Haven.
Take a short drive to one of Southwest Michigan’s fabulous wineries and tasting rooms. Within a ½ hour drive of South Haven you’ll find many wineries to explore and enjoy! Most are open year round, but please check for specific hours of operation.
If you happen to be staying in early February, our annual Ice Breaker festival is so much fun with activities for the whole family and the adults! From ice carving competitions and chili cook-off to ice skating shows and horse sleigh rides, the weekend is packed with fun!
Valentine’s Day weekend provides a wonderful romantic getaway. Our many B&B’s and Inns offer great settings to celebrate with that special someone!
Evening
Our many local and regional restaurants and eateries provide wonderful options for dinner. Whether you feel like casual dining or something more formal – we have it all! See all the great options and hours of operation.
Be sure to stroll down to the lighthouse before the sun sets – You can catch some magical sights in all kinds of weather!
Relax and unwind with an after dinner cocktail at one of our evening eateries. You’ll find a wonderful assortment of wines, martinis and specialty drinks in a warm setting.
Stroll back to your accommodations through downtown South Haven. It’s a winter wonderland with the streets lit up with seasonal lighting. Maybe the snow will be falling for that postcard setting!
