Summer Day or Weekend Trip
Only have a day or two to spend in the area this summer? Here is our list of recommended activities:
Get your morning exercise with a walk or run out to our historic lighthouse. Bring your yoga mat and join the informal group of yoga enthusiasts on the beach!
If you have a bit more time and want to learn more about the history of our area, take the historic “Harbor Walk.” This tour starts at the South Beach lighthouse and runs along the south side of the Black River, across the draw bridge, and along the north side of the Black River to the north pier head. Along the way you’ll be able to stop at the 21 Historical Markers and read about all facets of our historic past.
Enjoy an early morning out on the water on a fishing charter. Have fun on “Big Blue” and maybe even bring in a big catch!
Comb the beaches for beach glass! You never know what kind of interesting rocks and glass washed ashore overnight. There’s nothing like the peace of the walking the sandy shores of the Lake on a calm summer morning.
Take the kids to South Beach and Kid’s Corner Park. The kids will love playing on the fort, swings, and other activities. The huge green space at the Park is a great place to play catch, hit a ball, play basketball or kick the soccer ball.
Let your kids experience Maritime history! The daily Pirate Chaser sail on the Friends Good Will gives the kids the opportunity to chase down the Pirate Ship and captures the treasure! The cruise starts at the Michigan Maritime Museum campus.
Ready for a round of golf? Our local golf courses provide beautiful venues that will are fun and challenging for golfers at all levels.
Stroll downtown to experience one of South Haven’s many shops and boutiques to find that special something. From clothing and art to antiques and jewelry, you’re sure to find something for everyone!
Stop at one of our fabulous coffee shops and bakeries for a hot beverage or cool drink and snack.
Rent a bike or scooter to explore a bit more of the area. You’ll love the beauty and serenity of the Kal Haven Trail or Van Buren trail on your bike. If the kids need more action, the skate park at the Kal Haven trail head is a full of fun ramps and jumps sure to challenge any skill level!
Experience local history and culture in one of our lovely museums. The Center for the Arts, Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum, Flywheelers Museum, and Michigan Maritime Museum offer unique exhibits and a chance to learn about our historic past.
Ready to just unwind? One of our many City beaches is sure to be close and offer pristine sandy beaches. You can just lie on the beach and catch some sun – or the more adventurous can rent a kayak, paddleboard, jet ski or boat! There’s nothing like the magic of Lake Michigan.
Southwest Michigan is home to some fabulous wineries and tasting rooms. Within a ½ hour drive of South Haven you’ll find many wineries to explore and enjoy!
Want to get out of the water? The Michigan Maritime Museum offers six on water experiences including the tall ship Friends Good Will and Lindy Lou river launch. Or take a cruise on the Elsie J – a true Lake tug boat!
Our many local and regional restaurants and eateries provide wonderful options for dinner. Whether you feel like casual dining or something more formal – we have it all! See all the great dining options.
How about an evening matinee at our historic movie theater? You won’t find first run movies at such an affordable price anywhere else.
You can’t stay in South Haven without stopping by to enjoy some ice cream at one of our fabulous ice cream shops and dairies!
Check out the daily schedules for local entertainment around town. On Thursdays catch the Riverfront concert series. Many local eateries feature live entertainment on weekends and some weekdays.
Make time to catch one of our amazing sunsets. Take your camera and walk to one of our many beaches for a spectacular view – it’s never the same two days in a row! Make sure to watch for the Green light!
